The United States of America is on the brink of post poll violence eruption as President Donald Trump has moved to delegitimise the elections as a ‘fraud and an embarrassment’ amid ongoing vote tallying vowing Supreme Court action.
He also declared having won the presidential race despite the final tallying having not been officially announced and continuing vote counting.
In a live televised address, apparently disenfranchised Trump has demanded a stoppage of legitimately cast ballot a move widely interpreted as an affront to democratic practice of the sovereign will of the people.
“We did win this election…this is a fraud on the American public. This is an embarrassment to our country. We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election…we will be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop,” Trump has said in an extraordinary speech from the ceremonial East Room of the White House.
“We were getting ready for a big celebration. We were winning everything. And all of a sudden it was just called off,” he added.
President Trump who is a Republican candidate is in a neck-and-neck race with Democrat Joe Biden.
“I want to thank the American people for the tremendous support. Millions and millions of people voted us tonight and a very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise that group of people and we won’t stand for it,” he added.
Analysts contend that the US being a global hegemony and pro-democracy proponent, Trump’s self-win early declaration and demand for stoppage of vote counting will be a litmus test to the institutional independence in USA.
“The contestation raised by President Trump, self-declaration of early win and demand to stop vote tallying is preemptive and erroneous claim of victory. The only way you can uphold the sovereign will of the people is through protection of the legitimately cast ballot by legitimate citizens,” Kinyuru Munuhe, a Diplomacy and Communication consultant said.
Media reports indicate the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States had warned of potential armed post poll clashes as City Center businesses boarded up windows once again as protests were planned for either a President Trump or Joe Biden win – or a state of limbo, with delays in the vote-counting expected nationwide due to a surge in postal voting due to the pandemic.
