Some 1500 households have been recruited to benefit from Red Cross’s Cash Transfer Program for a period of three months.
According to Red Cross Operations and Disaster Manager Lenard Bombe each family would receive Sh3000 per month.
Many families were recruited from Samburu North subcounty followed by Samburu East and Samburu Central.
“With cash transfer, it is better if change the mentality way in which we usually distribute relief food because we can save the cost,” said Bombe.
Bombe said that Red Cross would ensure right channels are used for the money to reach the targeted families across the county.
Alex lementel, a beneficiary, thanked Red cross saying the money would help his wife take care of the children as he spends most of his days herding livestock in forests.
‘I am told the money will be given to my wife who will use it to buy food while I am away,” he said.
Samburu County Social Development Officer Muthoni Kahara said government is working on mechanism of ensuring money reaches the targeted people as they are far away from nearby towns and there is no mobile phone network.
