A farmer from Makutano village in the outskirts of Nanyuki town has demanded compensation from Meru County government after his cow fell in a pit latrine hole and died.
Stephen Migwi is demanding shillings 90,000 after his dairy cow fell in an open pit that was dug by the county last year to build a public toilet. Migwi said that he had gone to graze his cows at the trading centre when the tragedy occurred where the hole has remained open for months.
He said that he saw his cow going down and he could not believe it when he learn that it has sunk in the 25 feet pit. Residents said that the county dug the hole last year with an aim of erecting a public toilet but this has not happened.
They noted that they have been using dilapidated toilets and despite paying taxes to the Meru county government nothing has been done at the centre that is just one kilometer from the Laikipia Meru border. The said that they have been neglected by the Meru county government and were even contemplating migrating to Laikipia which seems to take care of some of their interests.
Migwi noted that the cow was the only source of income for his family and wants the county government to compensate him. He urged the county to fill the pit if it does not have money to build the toilet as it is posing great dangers to residents and even kids in the area.
