Environment polluters in Nairobi City will now face stern action to avert cases of clogging of the drainage systems, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has warned.
Sonko has cautioned that his county government won’t tolerate those who dump garbage in undesignated areas leading to blockage of the drainage systems in the capital.
“As we anticipate for the long rains my administration will not allow those who pollute our environment to go scot-free. We are going to fully enforce the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act 2015 to ensure we keep our environment clean and safer to avoid clogging of the drainage systems that eventually leads to flooding and disasters,” stated Sonko.
According to the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act 2015, anyone who contravenes the Act by dumping waste illegally shall be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh300,000 or to an imprisonment not exceeding three years or both.
“The unclogging exercise will continue in all the 17 Sub-Counties in Nairobi, but let me remind manufacturing the firms and individuals who dispose waste into our rivers and drainage system that their days are numbered,” warned Sonko.
Speaking on Tuesday during the ongoing massive unclogging of drainage systems exercise in city estates, Nairobi City County Government Environment CECM, Vesca Kangogo, reiterated Sonko’s remarks saying the initiative will continue even after the heavy rains.
“The ongoing massive unclogging of drainage systems in Nairobi City is now at 70 percent and we are still continuing with the initiative until we achieve the desired results,” said Kangogo.
Her Roads and Transport counterpart Hitan Majevdia who also accompanied the unclogging team during the exercise said the Nairobi County Government has deployed enough machinery and personnel in all the Sub-Counties to deal with the unclogging of the drainage systems.
“We have enough personnel and machinery including those from the Nairobi Regeneration team to make our initiative a success. The unclogging of drainage systems exercise will continue in all the 17 Sub-Counties,” added Majevdia.
