The government has seized contraband goods worth over Sh1.2 billion and is chasing after a ship that was in the coast with similar cargo.
Internal security Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi tabled a document before the joint Agriculture and Trade committees in parliament that detailed how contaminated rice and sugar as well as contraband fertiliser and assorted liquor were illegally brought in to the country.
Matiangi says 72 arrests have been made so far.
The CS however avoided MPs inquiry over the status of ship with contraband alleged to have disappeared at the coast saying international investigations were ongoing.
The security agencies are working with Interpol to seal the loopholes.
Some 1.4 million bags of sugar are already in police custody. The CS also acknowledged the government is facing challenge of porous borders and cautioned that some of the products in the markets are not authentic.
The committee session with Matiangi is now in camera as members interrogate a classified report on contraband goods.
