Samburu County government has set aside Sh90million to buy and distribute relief food in the next three months to 112,000 people affected by hunger in Samburu North…baragoi and Samburu East sub counties.
While speaking in Samburu North, Samburu governor Moses Lenolkulal said the county government is partnering with World Food Programme(WFP) to supply food worth Sh30million every month for a period of three month.
He said his government is partnering with national government to supply 15,000 bales of hay as a supplementary feed to livestock animals that are surviving drought in the county.
County in partnership with national government are buying and slaughtering 6000 livestock animals whose meat is being distributed as relief food to hunger stricken people in Samburu North and East sub counties.
He said the county has already received 4500 animals from national government and supplementing it with 1500.
Plans to drill 60 boreholes in strategic places to supply water to people and livestock to provide water for domestic use and livestock to relive the community from effects drought in future are underway.
Residents thanked the county government for food and grass. They also said that many cows have died in this region. They appeal to national government to supply many bails and food. They said that they have tried to sell the animals but cost only 3k each.
