City Hall has begun issuing stop orders against several upcoming buildings within Gigiri area, saying they have flouted approval laws.
Nairobi County Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe said the construction of the buildings commenced without approval from the Nairobi City County.
Among the buildings is an upcoming storey hotel that overlooks the UN headquarters and the American Embassy.
“Politically speaking, you can not build a building of this nature next to an installation such as the American Embassy and the United nations. This is the impunity that we continue to see across the city of Nairobi,” Igathe said.
He spoke after a spot check in the area on Thursday following complaints from the Gigiri Residents Association.
Igathe was accompanied by acting Urban Planning chief officer.
“So I am leaving here today having issued stop instructions and issuing specific laws that have been flouted and I expect every construction in this building to stop,” Igathe said.
Igathe tweeted that the crackdown will be extended to other areas within the city especially Eastlands.
Eastlands is one of city enclaves that has in recent years recorded cases of unapproved and poorly constructed houses collapsing causing deaths to tenants.
“As much as our city must densify, we need to do this with law and order. We cannot have buildings that do not comply to building codes and statutory inspections.
